Peer Counselling
Co-Ordinator: Ms S. Rule
Life Skills Training and Peer Counseling are of vital importance to mentor the youth in our community. With a multitude of socio-economic problems such as family violence, gangsterism, substance abuse, alcoholism. CAFDA recognised the urgent need to take action in assisting youth. Entrepreneurship and Compiling a Curriculum Vitae, Life Skills Training modules were well received by the learners. They found them to be invaluable especially since many of them would enter the job market once they have completed their High School education.
CAFDA ran a comprehensive eight week tailor-made programme to address all the relevant issues. Facilitators with sound knowledge of their particular subjects conducted inter- active sessions with Grade 10, 11&12 learners.
Evaluation forms were returned to co-ordinator and learners received certificates of participation, which will form part of the number of life skills certificates they require.
The four high schools who are participating are Fairmount High, (forty learners), Sibelius High (fifty learners) Grassy Park High (forty seven learners) and Heathfield High (thirty five learners).
The course is offered subject to the approval of the school principal. The training is conducted during the first week of school so that it does not coincide with the school curriculum.
The Peer Counselling Program has impacted the lives of a considerable number of youth in the Community.
