Cafda forced to sell historic building

The Cape Flats Development Association (Cafda) will be turning 70 this year but the NGO will not be going into the future based at its land-mark premises on the corner of Prince George Drive and Retreat Road, Grassy Park

The Mary Attle Hall in 1958The property, which includes the Mary Attlee Hall, will be sold this year. Last year Chairperson Kevin Southgate said the board had looked at various ways to make the property financially sustainable, as Cafda had hemorrhaged a lot of money in maintaining the property. He said maintenance costs were R50 000 a month and Cafda’s income was simply not sufficient to sustain this.

Cafda's mission has been to commit to the social and economic development of communities. It serves residents of Lavender Hill, Retreat, Steenberg, Vrygrond and surrounds. Mr Southgate said Cafda served its community well in the early years when they had adequate financial support.

However, over the years, the board has changed to being made up of 90% local community workers. The current board had faced a number of challenges since being elected. This includes a dire financial status as expenses surpassed income.

The board has tried to generate funds by drawing in the community to make use of the hall for weddings, concerts and other functions but this has not covered the costs.

Consequently the decision to sell was taken after a potential buyer was identified, who the board believes will add value to the community and not use the property as a business. The new owners will have restrictions (around demolishing) the property around Mary Attlee Hall, which was used as cowsheds 70 years ago.
